PARADISE AIR: A Creative Hub where International and Japanese Artists Unveil the Charm of Matsudo to the World
Have you ever heard of “PARADISE AIR”?
PARADISE AIR is an artist-in-residence program based in Matsudo City, established in May 2013 with support from the city goverment. During their stay in Matsudo, artists from Japan and around the world engage with the local community through a wide range of creative activities while sharing the city’s cultural charm and appeal. To date, hundreds of artists have participated in the program.
I first experienced a performance by a PARADISE AIR artist last year. Wen Hao Li, an artist from Taiwan, presented his research on the songs of Teresa Teng - an iconic Taiwanese singer widely known in Japan - through a combination of live performance and storytelling. I also learned Japanese partly through Teresa Teng’s songs, so I found the experience both nostalgic and deeply fascinating, especially hearing the stories and historical context behind her songs.

More recently, I attended a koto live performance held at PARADISE AIR. Since photography was allowed this time, I have shared a glimpse of the experience with you.
The performance featured Josh Farber-Hammond, an American koto performer and composer currently staying at PARADISE AIR, alongside distinguished guest performers Hayato Kobayashi and Yuka Nagatani. In an intimate and welcoming atmosphere, I was able to enjoy both solo and ensemble performances, including original compositions - an experience that felt truly special.
After the performance, audience members stayed to chat with the performers. I also had the opportunity to see koto sheet music for the first time. Unlike sheet music for intruments such as the piano or violin, koto notation is written vertically and uses numbers and Chinese characters (kanji), giving it a unique and striking appearance.
In this way, PARADISE AIR has created numerous opportunities to connnect artists with the local community. I believe that the chance to experience diverse cultures and artistic expressions up close is one of Matsudo’s unique charms.

国内外のアーティストによる、松戸の魅力発信拠点「PARADISE AIR」
皆さん、「PARADISE AIR」をご存じですか。
「PARADISE AIR」は、松戸市の支援のもと、2013年5月に設立されたアーティスト・イン・レジデンス事業の拠点です。国内外から訪れたアーティストが滞在し、松戸の文化の魅力を発信するとともに、地域との交流を通じて多彩な創作活動を行っています。これまでに、数百人ものアーテストが滞在しています。
私が初めて「PARADISE AIR」のアーティストによるパフォーマンスを鑑賞したのは、昨年のことです。台湾出身のアーティスト、李文皓氏は、日本でも広く知られる台湾出身の歌手、テレサ・テンの楽曲についての研究成果を、演奏と語りを交えて紹介しました。私自身、日本語を勉強した際に、テレサ・テンの歌を通じて日本語を身につけたこともあり、その背景やエピソードを聞きながら、懐かしさとともに深い興味を覚えました。

そして先日、「PARADISE AIR」で開催された箏の演奏会にも足を運びました。今回は写真撮影が可能とのことで、その様子をぜひ皆さんにもご紹介したいと思います。
演奏会では、滞在中のアメリカ出身の箏演奏者・作曲家、ジョッシュ・ファーバー＝ハーモンド氏を中心に、著名な箏演奏者である小林甲矢人氏と長谷由香氏がゲストとして出演しました。居心地の良い空間の中で、オリジナルの曲を取り入れたソロ演奏やアンサンブル演奏を間近で鑑賞することができて、とても貴重な体験となりました。
演奏会後も、観客がそのまま会場に残り、演奏者との交流を楽しんでいました。私もその場で初めて箏の楽譜を見ることができました。一般的なピアノやヴァイオリンなどの楽譜とは違い、縦書きで数字や漢字が並んだ独特な形式をしており、驚きました。
このように「PARADISE AIR」は、アーティストと地域がつながる機会を数多く創っています。身近な場所で国内外の多様な文化や表現に触れられることは、松戸ならではの魅力のひとつではないでしょうか。
