Have you ever heard of “pumpkin folk art” (“Mingei Kabocha” in Japanese), in which characters faces are painted on pumpkins?
The other day, I visited Genroku Matsudo Village, which is said to be “a hidden attraction” in Matsudo City, to see pumpkin folk art on display. Opened in 2005, Genroku Matsudo Village has been featured on various TV programs and magazines, and became well-known nationwide.
As soon as I stepped into the village, I saw many pumpkins resembling various faces of celebrities, sumo wrestlers, Peko-chan, Doraemon…etc…lined up on the right side of the entrance. Mr. Nakadate, the village owner, explained each of them to me, as well as how he started the pumpkin folk art. It goes back more than 20 years ago, when he saw that misshappen pumpkins were thrown away after being harvested, and he hit upon the idea of painting portraits on pumpkins. The pumpkins are dried for a year first, then, depending on the natural shape of the pumpkin, he will decide which character should be painted on. He always tries to make the most of its natural shape as much as he can. Mr. Nakadate even painted portraits of former prime ministers on pumpkins, such as PM Abe and PM Koizumi, and presented his work directly to them.
Some birds made from gourds and other plant fruits were on display as well.

On the left side of the entrance, there is a house called “Old Folk Utensil Museum”. Approximately 5.000　daily life items aged from the Edo period (1603-1868) to the 1950s that were collected by Mr. Nakadate himself are on display here. Seeing the pendulum clocks, charcoal irons and foot operated sewing machines made me feel like I had traveled back in time to the past for a while.
Genroku Matsudo Village has so many things to offer to visitors and the entrance fee is totally free! Many thanks to Mr. Nakadate. I would definitely recommend the village to my friends!

みなさんはかぼちゃに顔を描き込んだ「民芸かぼちゃ」について聞いたことがありますか。
先日、数多くの「民芸かぼちゃ」が展示され、松戸市の穴場スポットとも言われている「元禄まつど村」を見に行きました。2005年にオープンし、それ以降数々のテレビ番組や雑誌に紹介され、全国的にもよく知られています。
入口から入ってすぐ右側に、芸能人、お相撲さん、ペコちゃん、ドラえもんなど、様々なキャラクターに見立てたかぼちゃのお面たちがたくさん並んでいます。村長である中舘さんが展示品について説明して、「民芸かぼちゃ」を始めたきっかけを聞かせてくださいました。二十数年前に、地域で採られるかぼちゃの中で、形が悪いものは捨てられるのを見て、「かぼちゃに似顔絵を描いてみよう」とのアイデアがひらめいたとのことです。かぼちゃを1年間乾燥させたあとに、形状を見て、誰に似ているかを見極めて、かぼちゃの自然な形を生かしながら顔を描き込みます。今までに、安倍総理や小泉総理等、歴代の総理大臣にも似顔絵を描いたかぼちゃを贈呈しました。
展示品の中には、ヒョウタンや植物の実で作った鳥もあります。

そして、入口の左側には、「古民具資料館」があり、中舘さんが個人で集めてきた江戸時代から昭和30年代にかけての生活用具などの5,000点が展示さています。振り子時計、炭火アイロン、足踏みミシンなどを見て、一瞬過去にタイムスリップしたかのように感じました。
「元禄まつど村」、これだけたくさんの見どころがあるのに、入場料はなんと無料！村長・中舘さんに本当に感謝ですね。ぜひ友達にお勧めしたいです。
