Have you ever heard of the name “Tokugawa clan”? The Tokugawa clan was a family of shogun that founded Japan’s Edo shogunate (1603-1868).
It turns out Matsudo City has a close bond with Tokugawa clan. There is a holiday villa called “Tojo-tei House” and its garden in the city, which was built by Tokugawa Akitate (1853-1910), the 11th head of the Mito Tokugawa clan, and where he spent the latter half of his life. In July 2006, the Tojo-tei House was designated as a national important cultural property and now is the only Tokugawa family residence exhibited to the public in Japan.
I have visited Tojo-tei House many times and have enjoyed the beauty of every season. What i enjoy the most is the scenery in early spring when the plum blossoms are in full bloom, and I go often to see it. On a clearly day, Tojo-tei House will offer you a good view to see Mt. Fuji. On the Tojo-days, which are 10th, 20th, 30th of every month, you can step down to the spacious lawn garden and take a walk. After enjoying the beautiful scenery, please stop by the adjacent history museum to have a look at valuable artifacts and materials belonging to Tokugawa Akitate.
Just 10 minutes walk from the east exit of Matsudo station, Toji-tei House is also easily accessible from Tokyo. If you have a chance to come to Japan, please pay a visit to Tojo-tei House too.

みなさん、「徳川家」という名前を聞いたことがありますか。「徳川家」は日本の江戸幕府（1603年～1868年）を開いた将軍家です。
松戸市は徳川家との縁があります。市内には水戸徳川家の第11代藩主の徳川昭武（あきたけ）(1853-1910)が建設し、後半生を過ごした戸定邸（とじょうてい）という別邸とその庭園がまだ残っています。戸定邸は2006年7月に国の重要文化財に指定され、一般公開されている唯一の徳川家の住まいです。
私は今までに戸定邸を何度も訪れたことがあり、季節折々の美しさを味わいました。一番好きなのは梅花が咲き誇る早春の風景で、毎年春になったら必ず見に行きます。晴れた日には富士山も見えます。また、戸定の日である毎月10日、20日、30日には、広々した芝生の庭に降りて散策することができます。綺麗な景色を満喫した後、隣接する歴史館に寄れば、徳川昭武の貴重な遺品や資料が観覧できます。
戸定邸は松戸駅東口より徒歩10分程のところに位置し、東京からもアクセスしやすいので、外国人の方は日本に来たら、ぜひ戸定邸にも足を運んでください。
