Lan - a professional Japanese translator in Vietnam - will tell us about Japanese language
Hi everyone,
I majored in Japanese language in university. If you were to ask me if Japanese is difficult, I would immediately answer, “Yes it is VERY difficult.” First, there are three writing systems: hiragana, katakana and kanji. Also, there are more than 2.000 characters used in daily life! Vietnamese only has 89 characters. Furthermore, one kanji can have several seemingly irregular readings. Sometimes, I can’t even look up a kanji in the dictionary because I don’t know how to read it! Second, verbs in Japanese always come at the end of clauses so you have to listen carefully until the end to fully understand.
So when speaking and writing to foreigners, please use short sentences and use furigana for kanji, too. Using cute and easy-to-understand Japanese illustrations is also recommended! A small devise can be a big consideration!

みなさん、こんにちは。
将来日系企業で働きたいという憧れから、大学で日本語を専攻しました。「日本語は難しいの？」と聞かれたら、即座に「とても難しい」と答えます。まず、ひらがな、カタカタ、漢字があり、日常で使用される文字数だけでも2,000文字以上！ベトナム語は89文字です。しかも、漢字にはさまざまな読み方があり、規則性もないので、戸惑うのは日常茶飯事です。漢字の意味を調べたくても、読み方が分からず、辞書で引けないこともよくあります。次に、動詞が文の最後にあるので、最後まで注意して聞かないと正確な意味が把握できません。
日本語を母国語としない人、特に漢字を使わない国から来た人に対して話す時は「長い文」よりも「短い文」で、書く時は「漢字にフリガナ」があると伝わりやすいです。日本ならではの分かりやすくて、かわいいイラストも理解の大きな助けになります！小さな工夫でも大きな気配りになります！
