Lan, tell us about your cultural experiences! June 2023 Issue

One thing I like about Matsudo City is that even though it’s close to downtown Tokyo, there are still many farms and forests. Before I came to Japan, I had lived in urban cities in Vietnam and didn’t have many chances to go to forest. So I was really looking forward to “Open Forest in Matsudo”.
“Open Forest in Matsudo” is an event in which privately owned forests, where Satoyama volunteer activities are held, are opened to the public (“Satoyama” describes the border zone or area between mountain foothills and arable flat land). Starting from 2012, these events are being held annually in the hope that it will provide people an opportunity to think about what we can do to protect and maintain forests. I was impressed that Matsudo City has such an initiative.
This time, I went to two forests in Yabashira area. After walking about 15 minutes from the station, I entered a tranquil forestland. For a moment, I felt like I was in another world. The volunteer guides explained carefully about the trees and showed us the beautiful flowers hidden among the leaves which helped me learn a lot. They also told us stories about forest protection activities. Once again, I realized how grateful I am able to enjoy the nature of the forest in the city.

松戸市の好きなところの一つは都心に近いにも関わらず、農園や森がまだたくさんあることです。日本に来る前にベトナムの都会に住んでいた私は森に入ったことがあまりなかったので、「オープンフォレストin松戸」をとても楽しみにしていました。
「オープンフォレストin松戸」は、里やまボランティア活動が行われている民有地の森を市民に公開するイベントで、森を保全・維持するために、何ができるかを考えるきっかけになることを願って2012年から毎年開催されています。松戸市にはこんな取り組みがあるんだと感心しました。
今回は八柱周辺にある2つの森へ行きました。駅から約15分歩いたところで、とても静かな樹林地に入りました。一瞬別天地に行ったような感じもしました。ボランティアガイドが樹木について詳しく説明したり、葉っぱの中に隠れている綺麗な花を見せてくれたりして色々と勉強になりました。また、森を守る活動の話も聞いて、市内で森の自然を楽しめるのがやはりありがたいことだと改めて実感しました。
