When you think of flower viewing in Japan, cherry blossoms in spring often come to mind. However, early summer, before humidity sets in, also offers a variety of seasonal blooms to enjoy. In this month’s column, I’ll share some spots for early summer flower viewing in Matsudo City.
First up is Tojo-tei House ( (A 10 min-walk from the East Exit of Matsudo Station), where vibrant azaleas are currently in bloom. As you approach the quaint wooden gate, you’re welcomed by bright red blossoms. Stepping through the gate, you’ll find roundly trimmed azalea bushes dotted throughout the Tojogaoka Historical Park, adding cheerful pops of color that delight every visitor. Azaleas, in fact, are the city’s official flower and much loved by the locals. You’ll find them planted around the City Hall and in many public facilities across the city.

Next is Hondo-ji Temple, famously known as the “Hydrangea Temple” (A 10 min-walk from Kitakogane Station). Beginning in June, its grounds transform into a stunning sea of roughly 50,000 hydrangea plants and 5,000 iris, creating a truly breathtaking sight. This season always draws large crowds of visitors from both within and outside the city. With plenty of benches scattered across the spacious grounds, it’s easy to take a relaxing break as you enjoy the scenery.
For an early evening stroll, the Edogawa River Matsudo Flower Line (A 20 min-walk from the West Exit of Matsudo Station) is a great choice. From late April through mid-June, about two hectares of land come live with blooming poppies, capturing the attention of passerby. This area also serves as a resting place for wild birds, making it a perfect spot to unwind after work while enjoying the delightful co-performance of flower and birds.
Why not take some time to savor the natural beauty of early summer in Matsudo?

お花見と言えば春の桜が一般的ですが、実は蒸し暑くなる前の初夏にも、美しい花々を楽しむことができます。今月のコラムでは、松戸市内で楽しめる初夏のお出かけスポットをご紹介します。
まずおすすめしたいのは、色とりどりのツツジが咲き誇る戸定邸です。松戸駅東口から徒歩で約10分の場所にあります。趣のある木の門の前では、鮮やかな赤花のツツジが出迎えてくれます。門をくぐれば、戸定が丘歴史公園内のあちこちに植えられた、丸く刈り込まれたツツジも、訪れる人の目を楽しませてくれます。ツツジは松戸市の花でもあり、市内の本庁舎や公共施設などに多く植えられており、市民に親しまれています。

次にご紹介するのは、北小金駅から徒歩約10分の「紫陽花寺」としても知られる有名な本土寺です。6月に入ると、境内を埋め尽くすように咲く5万本の紫陽花と5千本の花菖蒲が、華やかな彩りで訪れる人々を迎えてくれます。この時期は市内外から多くの観光客が訪れ、大変な賑わいを見せます。広い境内にはベンチも多く設置されており、歩き疲れたら座って一休みすることもできます。
そして、夕方の散策には、松戸駅西口から徒歩約20分の「江戸川松戸フラワーライン」がおすすめです。4月下旬から6月中旬にかけて、約2ヘクタールの敷地にポピーの花が一面に咲き誇り、道行く人の目を引きます。ここは野鳥の休憩地にもなっており、仕事帰りに河川敷で花と野鳥の共演を楽しみながら散歩すれば、心も身体もリフレッシュできます。
