Lan, tell us about your cultural experiences! August 2025 Issue

Since joining Matsudo City Hall, I’ve organized a variety of events to introduce Vietnamese culture such as cultural lectures, exhibitions, and cooking classes. This year, I took on a new challenge: launching the city’s very first beginner-friendly Vietnamese language course, consisting of ten sessions.
The idea came to me during Vietnamese cultural events, where I met Japanese participants who had either visited Vietnam or were planning to go. I thought that knowing a few useful Vietnamese phrases could make their trips even more enjoyable.
Here in Matsudo, there’s also a Japanese language volunteer group and an educational support program for children from overseas run by a local non-profit. I thought that if those involved in these initiatives could greet or introduce themselves in Vietnamese, it would help Vietnamese students feel more welcome.
That said, since it was the city’s first Vietnamese language course, I was a bit worried about whether we’d get enough participants. Thankfully, the Matsudo International Exchange Association - our course host - encouraged me with their words: “Let’s go ahead, even with a small group”. That support gave me the confidence to move forward.

In the end, we received 13 applications. Over the two and a half months of the course, most participants came regularly without missing a class. By the second half, their learning had noticeably accelerated, and I was truly impressed by how quickly they picked up the language.
We also held two practical sessions at Vietnamese restaurants and one at a Vietnamese grocery store. Despite the evening schedule, around ten people joined each time. Watching them eagerly read menus, savor the food, and shop for ingredients, I could feel their growing interest in Vietnam. One participant even told me, “I used to feel hesitant about going in, but now that I know what the atmosphere is like, I’ll definitely go again”. That really made me happy.
I hope the Vietnamese they learned will come in handy, whether during future trips or when visiting Vietnamese shops here in Matsudo. We’ll be offering the same course again this fall. If you’re interested, we’d love to have you join us!

松戸市役所に国際交流員として着任して以来、これまでにベトナム文化紹介の講座や展示会、料理教室など様々なイベントを実施してきましたが、今年は初めて初心者向けのベトナム語講座（全10回）の開催に挑戦しました。
きっかけは、ベトナム関連のイベントで、現地への旅行経験のある方や、これから行く予定の方と出会ったことでした。旅先で役立つベトナム語を知ってもらえたら、もっと楽しい旅行になるのではと思ったのです。
また、松戸市には日本語ボランティア会や、外国人の子どものための勉強会という日本語学習支援団体があります。日ごろ外国人生徒と接しているそうした方々がベトナム語であいさつや自己紹介ができれば、きっとベトナム人生徒が喜ぶだろうと思ったこともきかっけのひとつです。
とはいえ、ベトナム語講座は市内初の取り組みだったため、受講者が集まるか少し不安もありました。そんなとき、主催の松戸市国際交流協会から「少人数でも開催しましょう」と心強い後押しをいただき、開催が決定しました。

実際には13名の申し込みがあり、多くの方が2か月半の間、ほとんど休まずに通ってくださいました。後半には学びのスピードもかなり上がり、受講者の皆さんの吸収力の高さに驚かされました。
講座では、ベトナム料理店での体験学習（2回）やベトナム食材店の見学（1回）も設けました。夜の開催にも関わらず、毎回10名ほどが参加し、メニューを楽しそうに読んだり、料理や買い物を満喫したりした様子から、ベトナムへの関心の高まりを感じました。「今までは入りにくかったけど、雰囲気が分かったのでまた行きます」といった声が聞かれ、嬉しかったです。
講座で身に付けたベトナム語が、ベトナム旅行や市内のお店で役立てば何よりです。秋に同じ講座を再び開催します。ご興味のある方は、ぜひご参加ください！
