When people think of cosplay, they often imagine dressing up as beloved characters from anime or video games. The word “cosplay” itself is a Japanese creation, shortened from the English phrase “costume play”. Later, it spread overseas under the same name and has since become a global term.
In recent years, Matsudo City has been gaining attention as a “cosplay-friendly town”. When I first attended the Matsudo Last Summer Festival & Bon Odori in 2023, I was amazed to see so many cosplayers gathered at the venue. As the Bon dance (a traditional group dance performed during the Bon Festival) began around the yagura (a tall wooden stage), participants dressed as anime and game characters danced side by side with those in yukata (summer kimono). I returned to the festival again this year, and what I looked forward to most was this unique “Bon Dance with Cosplayers”. To me, it’s more than just fun for visitors - it reflects Matsudo’s welcoming spirit and embrace of diversity.

Cosplay can also be enjoyed at Matsudo’s spring event, the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival. When I attended, I saw cosplayers in colorful costumes striking poses against the backdrop of early-blooming cherry trees. It looked just like a scene straight out of an anime.
Thanks to its convenient access from Tokyo, Matsudo City attracts many cosplayers not only from the Tokyo itself but also from neighboring prefectures. In recent years, cosplay culture has also grown popular overseas, including in Vietnam, with events being held in many countries. I hope to one day see international cosplayers join Matsudo’s festivals one day, creating opportunities for cross-cultural exchange that reach beyond borders.

コスプレといえば、アニメやゲームなどのキャラクターになりきる衣装を思い浮かべる方が多いでしょう。「コスプレ」という言葉は、英語の「costume play」を略した日本発の和製英語です。その後「cosplay」として海外でも広まり、今では世界共通の言葉となっています。
松戸市は、近年「コスプレにやさしい街」として注目を集めています。私が2023年の「松戸ラストサマーフェス＆盆踊り」に参加したときのことですが、会場には思いがけず多くのコスプレイヤーが集まっていて、びっくりしました。さらに、やぐらを囲んで踊りが始まると、アニメやゲームのキャラクターの姿の参加者が、浴衣姿の参加者と肩を並べて踊りだします。伝統的な盆踊りと現代のポップカルチャーが同じ輪の中で響き合う光景は、とても印象的でした。今年も参加しましたが、やはりこのイベントならではの「コスプレイヤーとの盆踊り」を一番楽しみにしました。それは見物客を楽しませるだけでなく、多様性を受け入れる松戸市の取り組みを物語っているように思います。

また、松戸市では、春の「河津さくらまつり」でもコスプレが楽しまれています。訪れたことがありますが、早咲きの桜並木を背景に、色鮮やかな衣装に身を包んだコスプレイヤーがポーズを決める姿は、まるでアニメのワンシーンのようです。
都内からのアクセスが良いこともあり、東京や近隣県から多くのコスプレイヤーが松戸を訪れています。近年はベトナムをはじめ海外でもコスプレ文化が盛んになっており、世界各地でイベントが開催されています。いつの日か、松戸市のまつりなどにさらに多くの国からのコスプレイヤーが集まり、国境を越えた交流の輪が広がることを期待しています。
