Hoi An is an old port town located in Vietnam’s central Quang Nam Province, near the mouth of the Thu Bon River.
There is an old quarter in Hoi An which is regconized as a World Culture Heritage Site. Actually, this old quarter has a close historical bond with Japan.
Looking back on its history, Hoi An was founded around the 2nd century as a port of the Kingdom of Champa. From the 16th to the 18th century, many merchants from Portugal, Netherlands, China and Japan came to Hoi An, which made Hoi An flourish as an international trading port. At its peak at the end of the 16th century, there even used to be a Japanese quarter in Hoi An where more than 1,000 Japanese people lived.
In 1593, Japanese merchants living in Hoi An built the “Pagoda Bridge” (commonly known as the Japanese Bridge) to connect the Japanese quarter and the Chinese quarter in the area. That 18m long arched and tile-roofed bridge still remains and is a popular sight-seeing spot for both Vietnamese and foreign tourists.
The Japanese Bridge is also printed on Vietnam’s 20,000VND banknote (approximately 85 yen) issued in 2016.
It’s interesting that there is a “Japanese bridge” since old times in a small town in faraway Vietnam, isn’t it?

ホイアン市はベトナム中部クアンナム省の都市であり、トゥボン川の河口に位置する古い港町です。
ホイアン市内には世界文化遺産に登録された旧市街があり、その旧市街は日本とも縁の深い歴史を持っています。
歴史を辿ってみると、ホイアン市は2世紀頃にチャンパ王国の港として作られ、16世紀から18世紀に、ポルトガル人、オランダ人、中国人、日本人が来航し、国際貿易港として繁栄しました。16世紀末の最盛期には、1000人以上の日本人が住む日本人街もできました。
1593年に日本人街と中国人街を結ぶために、当時のホイアン市に住んでいた日本人商人たちは「来遠橋」（通称、日本橋）を建造しました。長さ18mの瓦屋根付きのその太鼓橋は現在まで残り、国内外の観光客に大人気の観光スポットとなっています。
「来遠橋」は2006年発行のベトナム紙幣2万ドン札（約85円程度）にも描かれています。
遠いベトナムの小さな街に昔からの「日本橋」があるなんて面白いですね。
