Lan, tell us about your cultural experiences! September 2022 Issue

Shortly after I started working as a CIR in Matsudo City, I received a request from the Matsudo International Exchange Association (MIEA) to be a lecturer of the intercultural lecture series called “MIEA Around the World”.
After a lot of thinking, I came to a decision to hold two lectures in summer. One was for elementary school students with Vietnam quiz, game and origami (paper folding). The other was a Vietnamese cooking class for parents and children, in which we made “Banh troi” (floating rice cake) and “Pho tron” (pho salad). I had never lectured, nor held a cooking class for such large groups before, so I was quite worried. But thanks to the help of MIEA staff and my colleagues, we were able to carry out the two events successfully.
What impressed me most during the two events was the how much the children actively participated. When I did Vietnam quiz, they eagerly raised their hands to answer my questions, while also asking many of their own. When we made origami of “Ao dai” (Vietnamese traditional costume), none of them gave up, and tried their best until the end. In Vietnamese cooking class, some came very early and a student even greeted me in Vietnamese. Needless to say, I was very moved by this. In the class, I could see they enjoyed rolling and boiling “banh troi”.
I hope that these two events made for good summer memories for the children and made them interested in Vietnam.

松戸市に国際交流員として着任してからまもなく、公益財団法人松戸市国際交流協会（MIEA）から依頼を受けて、各国の文化を紹介する「MIEA世界めぐり」という講座の講師をすることになりました。
色々と考えた末に、小学生を対象にベトナムのクイズ、ゲーム、折り紙をする講座と、親子を対象にバンチョイというベトナムのスイーツとフォーのサラダを作る料理教室を夏休みに行うことを決めました。どれも今までの仕事では経験したことがなく、かなり心配でした。しかし、MIEAの職員と同僚が力になってくれたおかげで、2つのイベントを無事に行うことができました。
イベントをやって、感動させられたのは子どもたちが積極的に参加してくれたことです。ベトナムのクイズの講座では、子どもたちはたくさん手を挙げて答え、質問もたくさんしてくれました。ベトナムの民族衣装である「アオザイ」の折り紙をした時も、みんな諦めずに最後まで頑張りました。そして、ベトナム料理教室では、早めに来た子もいれば、ベトナム語で挨拶してくれた子もいました。とても感動しました。子どもたちはバンチョイを丸めたり、茹でたりするのを楽しんでいました。
この2つのイベントが子どもたちにとって夏休みのいい思い出になって、ベトナムに興味を持つきっかけになることを願っています。
