I had never known the taste of blueberries until I came to Japan many years ago. When studying in Tokyo at that time, I could only eat blueberries that were sold in grocery stores. However, since when I came to Matsudo City, I have been able to experience blueberry picking as well.
Blueberries are in season from June to August, so as soon as June came, I headed to a blueberry farm along the Shin-Keisei Line nearby. It was my second time picking blueberries in Matsudo City.
I entered the farm feeling like I was on a treasure hunt. The reason why I felt that way is because there are large variations in fruit maturation within a blueberry cluster, so it may take time to find the ripest ones.

The white coating you might see on a blueberry is called bloom, and the more of it you see, the sweeter the fruit tastes. Another tip to select the tasty blueberries is to check not only the color of the fruit but also the color of its stem. In other words, fruits that have turned a dark purple to the base of their stem being prized the most. The weather was hot that day but I was able to pick lots of delicious juicy blueberries that were both sweet-and-sour in flavor.
In addition to blueberries, each year Matsudo City farms offer strawberry picking from January to May, as well as pear and grape picking from August to October. 私は日本に来てから人生で初めてブルーベリーを味わうことができました。なぜなら、ベトナムにはブルーベリーがないからです。以前、東京に留学した時には、スーパー等で売っているブルーベリーしか食べられなかったのですが、松戸市に来てからはブルーベリー狩りも体験できるようになりました。
ブルーベリー狩りの句は6月～8月ですので、6月に入ってから早速近くの新京成線沿いにあるブルーベリーの農園に行きました。松戸市におけるブルーベリー狩りの体験は今回で2回目です。
お宝探しのような気分で農園に入りました。なぜお宝探しと思ったかというと、一つの房の中に成熟度の違う粒が混在しているので、完熟したものを探すには手間がかかるからです。

果実の表面に白い粉が付いているものがありますが、この白い粉は多いほど甘いブルーベリーである証。また、美味しいブルーベリーを摘み取るには、果実の着色だけではなくて、果柄の着色を確認するのも必要。つまり、果柄の付け根まで黒く色づいているものがお勧めです。ブリーベリー狩りに行った日はすごく暑かったですが、採れたてのブルーベリーはみずみずしくて甘酸っぱくてとても美味しかったです。
松戸市では、ブルーベリー以外に、1～5月はイチゴ、8～10月は梨とぶどう狩り体験もできます。遠くへ行かなくても1年を通じて旬のフルーツ狩りが楽しめます。皆さんも是非体験してみてくださいね。
