Ojigi - Japanese bow

When I studied Japanese at the university in Vietnam, I also learned how to bow in Japanese ways. At that time, I felt a little strange because in Vietnam, bowing down is mostly used only for apology.

After that, when I came to Japan to study, I was very surprised when I saw staff in department stores bowing their heads all together at opening time, or staff in station making a bow to a departing train. So I learnt that Japanese bows are used not only for greeting but also in various situations.

In Vietnam, there is no bowing culture. In order to show respect to someone, you need to change the greeting words according to their age, gender or position…etc. Conversely, it seems more complicated than Japanese bows.

I didn’t usually bow in Vietnam, but thanks to working with Japanese people for years, I got to bow naturally without my knowledge. Now, I even sometimes nod over the phone. It’s really like “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”.
