「レッツゴー キャム！」Cam, Ikuzo! Come follow Camden’s journey! September 2026

On Sunday, August 9th and Monday, August 10th, I went to the 19th Matsudo-shuku Sakagawa Kento Matsuri (Lantern Festival)!
For me, the absolute highlight of the festival is none other than the toro nagashi (floating lanterns). The warm lights drifting down the Sakagawa River have become an iconic summer tradition in Matsudo, and the enchanting scene captivates countless visitors every year.
This was the 19th year of the festival, but in fact, over 20 years ago even if someone wanted to hold a festival at the Sakagawa River, the river itself was in no condition for floating lanterns or other activities.
In the past, the Sakagawa River was prone to severe flooding, and local residents have been working together since the Edo period to mitigate flood damage. Furthermore, about 40 years ago, there was a time when the water quality deteriorated drastically, leading to community-driven initiatives to clean and restore the river.
Learning about the Sakagawa River’s history reminded me of the Kennebec River back in my home state of Maine, USA, which local residents also successfully revitalized after years of heavy pollution. That project wasn't just about restoring its clean appearance; it was about creating a space where people could enjoy outdoor recreation like canoeing and fishing, and breathing new life into the local community. The same goes for toro nagashi at the Sakagawa River, having this "special role," even just once a year really makes the entire town feel so much more vibrant.

The Matsudo-shuku Sakagawa Kento Matsuri is truly a place that people of all ages can enjoy. Seeing energetic R&B and hip-hop dance performances take the stage right after traditional Japanese dances, this blending of different generations and cultural art forms shows how the festival embraces new ways to have fun in step with modern times. I felt that this festival reflects a wonderful aspect of Matsudo’s community-building spirit: honoring tradition while continuing to embrace fresh, contemporary ideas.
Next summer, I warmly encourage everyone to take a walk along the Sakagawa River and experience the warm lights and strong sense of community for yourselves. Looking beyond the everyday river scenery and reflecting on the history and passion of the people who have lived alongside I believe can help one discover a new charm of Matsudo.

8月9日（日曜）~10日（月曜）に行われた「第19回 松戸宿坂川献灯まつり」に行ってきました！
私にとって献灯まつりの一番の見どころは、なんといっても灯篭流しです。坂川を漂う温かな灯りは松戸の夏の風物詩になっており、その光景は多くの人々を魅了しています。

献灯まつりは今回で19回目を迎えますが、実は20年以上前に、坂川でこのようなまつりを開催したくても、川自体が灯篭籠流しなどの活動ができるような状態ではありませんでした。

かつての坂川では洪水被害があり、江戸時代から地域は水害を減らすために取り組みが行われていました。また40年以上前には水質がかなり悪化した時期もありましたが、水質改善に向けた取り組みが進められました。

坂川の歴史を知ると、私の地元であるアメリカ・メイン州のケネベック川でも、かつて住民たちの手で、汚れた川を再生させた歴史があったことを思い出します。それは単に「見た目の綺麗さ」を取り戻すためだけではなく、カヌーや釣りといったアウトドアを楽しむ場を作り、地域に活気を呼び戻すための取り組みでした。灯篭流しのように年に一度でも川に「特別な役割」を与えることで、街全体がより生き生きしているように感じます。

そして松戸宿坂川献灯まつりは、老若男女が楽しめる場所になっています。日本の伝統的な踊りのすぐ次にR&Bやヒップホップダンスが披露され、異なる世代や文化のパフォーマンスを見ると、時代に合わせて新しい楽しさを取り入れているように感じました。この祭りには、伝統を大切にしながらも、時代に合わせて新しい楽しさを取り入れていく「松戸の街づくり精神」の一面が表れていると感じました。

来年の夏は、皆さんもぜひ坂川沿いを訪れて、温かな灯りと地域のつながりを実際に感じてみてください。何気ない川の風景の向こうに、そこに暮らしてきた人々の歴史や思いを感じることで、きっと新しい魅力を感じられるはずです。
