Checking Out the Results of “The Garden Experiment”!

In a column last year, I introduced “The Garden Experiment,” a citizen science project jointly organized by the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan and the Matsudo International Science Art Festival team. I also took part in the experiment using my own garden plot, helping research how using compost brings about changes in soil microorganisms.

This year, the project’s results were put on display at the Matsudo International Science Art Festival held at Tojo-tei Residence on October 24 and 25. I visited the festival on the 25th, taking in the various exhibits while seeing firsthand how the research I contributed to finally took shape.

This study wasn’t just carried out in Japan, many citizens in Switzerland participated as well, with each country examining the microorganisms living in its soil. In my own plot in Matsudo, we compared three types of soil: soil with added compost, soil with heat-treated compost, and untreated soil with nothing added. Through DNA analysis of the collected soil samples, the soil mixed with compost showed a distinctly different microbial composition compared to the untreated soil. This suggests that the nutrients and microorganisms contained in the compost likely influenced the native microbes already present in the ground.

What made me even happier was finding my own profile and the analysis results from my plot featured right in the exhibition. In this project, local residents offer up their own gardens and fields, allowing scientists to gather diverse environmental data that researchers could never collect on their own. Seeing this, I truly felt that each person’s participation plays a vital role in moving scientific discovery forward.

For me, the gardening that originally began as a way to connect with the local community has now expanded into connections with researchers and citizens in Switzerland, which feels truly fascinating. What started as a small everyday activity close to home has grown into international cooperation, deepening our shared understanding of environmental conservation and the soil’s underground ecosystem.

Seeing the exhibition left me hoping that initiatives like this continue to spread even further. If people across different countries and regions bring together the knowledge and data gained from their own local environments, we might come to understand so much more about the natural world that surrounds us! I look forward to seeing how the Matsudo International Science Art Festival continues to connect people, communities, and nations through science and art.

「The Garden Experiment」
