Beer culture was thriving so much in the month of May in Matsudo, that it almost made me think the “Month of Beer” was being celebrated!

Over the course of two weeks, the city hosted the two-day “Food & Beer Garden in Nishiguchi Park” and the four-day “Matsudo Craft Beers & Hashigo-zake Festival.” These events perfectly matched the cheerful mood of early summer. The Matsudo Craft Beers Festival took place at the pedestrian deck at Matsudo Station's west exit, where people with a beer in hand gathered around tables that were set up, enjoying lively conversations. While many of the vendors offering beer were local to Matsudo, there were also participants from other parts of Chiba Prefecture, as well as from Ibaraki and Tokyo, making the event an excellent opportunity to compare the taste of a variety of regional beers.

Because driving a car is the usual means for getting around in my home country, the United States, spontaneously stopping to join in on the fun at an event near the train station was a completely new experience for me. Back in the U.S., in the midst of a hectic life, it’s pretty common that people will forgo attending a local event of interest after considering the stress of figuring out where to park and other burdens, resulting in another day of staying inside. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average amount of time Americans spent on socializing and communication per day dropped from 38 minutes in 2019 to just 34 minutes in 2021, following the outbreak of COVID-19. By 2023, that number hadn’t changed. That’s why events that allow for casual social interaction, such as casually making conversation with strangers on the way home from shopping, are highly valuable to any community. With social ties having weakened due to the pandemic, I think that May’s events in Matsudo offered a meaningful opportunity for reconnection.

In my home state of Maine in the United States, there’s a city known as Portland which is home to a district in the downtown area full of breweries, where you can walk around and sample various kinds of beer. As a coastal city, Portland has remained lively even after the pandemic, as people of all ages refuse to let post-COVID loneliness bring down their spirits. It’s a wonderful city to visit if you're ever traveling in the United States.

松戸市では5月はビールの月と思わせるほど、ビール文化が栄えていました。

二日間の「フード＆ビアガーデンin西口公園」と四日間の「松戸クラフトビールフェスwithはしご酒」が2週にわたって開催され、初夏の陽気にぴったりの催しでした。「松戸クラフトビールフェス」は、松戸駅西口広場で行われ、設置されたテーブルの周りにビールを片手に持ち、陽気に立ち話を楽しむ人々の姿があふれていました。ビールを提供していた出店者の多くは松戸市内のお店でしたが、千葉県内の他の地域や茨城県、都内からの出店もあり、飲み比べを楽しむのに良いフェスティバルでした。

アメリカでは、車でお店へ行くことが多かったので、駅に立ち寄ってイベントに突然参加することは初めての経験です。アメリカでは忙しい生活を送っていたので、行きたいイベントがあっても、車をどこに駐車するかなどの不安がよぎると、やはり面倒と思ってしまい、いつも通り家で過ごすことが多かったです。実は、アメリカ労働統計局によると、アメリカ人が1日に社交やコミュニケーションに費やす平均時間は、2019年の時点で38分でしたが、コロナウイルス感染症の大流行後の2021年に34分に減少し、2023年の時点でも変化がありませんでした。そのため、買い物帰りなどのついでに気軽に他人とコミュニケーションができるイベントが重要になっており、コロナウイルスなどの影響で人とのつながりの減少している中、今回のイベントは良い機会になっていると思います。

私の出身のアメリカ・メイン州にあるポートランド市のダウンタウンには醸造所が集まっているエリアがあり、歩いてさまざまなビールを飲み比べをすることができます。そこは海に多く面している都市であり、市民の方々がコロナ後に感じた生活における孤独感に屈せず、老若男女が集い、いつも賑わいを見せています。アメリカ国内を旅行する際には、ぜひ訪れてほしい都市です。
