Encountering Traditional Japanese Instruments
I had the opportunity to experience a “Wa” (Japanese-style) live performance by a trio playing the shamisen, koto, and shinobue.
The concert was held at a cafe in Matsudo City and offered a warm, lively atmosphere where traditional Japanese music could be enjoyed up close. One of the koto pieces was based on “The Tale of the Heike,” focusing on a scene from the Genpei War. The lyrics used in this performance came from the koto composition “Suma no Arashi,” which portrays the tragic encounter between the warrior Kumagai Naozane and Atsumori, a young general of the Heike clan. Experiencing the story alongside the solemn but intense sound of the koto instrument was deeply memorable.
Near the end of the live performance, a piece from the Japanese animated film “Princess Mononoke” was played on the shinobue. The clear, dignified sound filled the room, evoking a forest-like atmosphere and gently drawing the audience into the world of Studio Ghibli.
What left the strongest impression on me during the concert was the shamisen performance of folk music (min'yo). Two of the songs presented were “Soran Bushi,” a traditional folk song, and “Sudarabushi,” a popular song from the Showa era. Soran Bushi, which originated from fishing communities in Hokkaido, was performed, and its energetic rhythm naturally brought to mind images of the sea and hard labor. In contrast, during Sudarabushi, the humorous lyrics and playful performance invited the audience to follow along by doing the same movements together, turning it into a fun, shared experience where laughter naturally spread through the room.
Doing the same movements in unison with others may remind many people in Japan of “Radio Taiso,” a popular exercise routine practiced from childhood by following radio broadcasts. In my home country, the United States, there are also dances that anyone can easily join by copying simple movements, such as one called “Cha Cha Slide,” which originated in the U.S. and encourages physical exercise. Seeing this type of dance in communities in both Japan and the United States reminded me that, no matter the culture, getting up and moving around together can bring people closer.
Whether it was performances connected to ancient stories like The Tale of the Heike, folk songs from the Showa era, or anime music from the Heisei era, it was so special to hear so many eras of music all played using the same traditional Japanese instruments, making the concert itself feel like a single flowing journey through Japan’s history. It was a wonderful reminder that traditional music can still bring people together and create joyful shared experiences in today’s day and age too. I hope that through being blended with dance and other modern expressions, traditional music will continue to spread in new forms and be enjoyed by people around the world.
日本の伝統楽器と出会った経験
三味線・琴・篠笛のトリオによる「和のライブ」を体験しました！
松戸市のあるカフェで開催された今回のライブは、日本の伝統音楽を間近で楽しめる、温かく賑やかな時間が広がっていました。琴の演目の一つは、『平家物語』に基づいた作品で、「源平合戦」の中で描かれる場面を題材としています。この演奏で用いられていた歌詞は、箏曲「須磨の嵐」によるもので、武士・熊谷直実と、平家の若い武将であった平敦盛との悲劇的な出会いが、静かでありながら力強い音楽とともに表現されていました。
ライブの最後には、日本のアニメ映画「もののけ姫」の曲が篠笛で演奏されました。澄んだ音色には威厳があり、森の中にいるかのような静けさに包まれ、ジブリ映画の世界へと自然に引き込まれるような感覚でした。
今回のライブで特に印象に残ったのは、民謡の三味線演奏でした。「ソーラン節」という民謡と、「スーダラ節」という昭和歌謡が披露されました。ソーラン節は北海道の漁の現場から生まれた民謡として歌で演奏され、躍動感のあるリズムから海や労働の風景が自然に想像されました。一方「スーダラ節」の演奏では、スーダラ節の歌詞にあるユーモアを交えた演出に合わせ、決まった動きを真似しながら思わず笑ってしまうようなコミカルな動きが生まれ、皆で同じように体を動かして楽しんでいる様子でした。
決まった動きを周りの人と一緒に真似することは、日本では子供の頃からラジオ放送に合わせて体を動かす「ラジオ体操」としても親しまれてきました。私の母国であるアメリカにも、日本のラジオ体操のように、周りの人の動きを真似したりしながら、誰でも気軽に参加できるダンスがあります。「Cha Cha Slide」はその一つで、自然と運動にもなるアメリカで生まれたダンスです。日本とアメリカという異なる文化でも、皆と同じ動きによる一体感を体験できる点については魅力を感じました。
平家物語のような大昔の物語につながる演奏、昭和の民謡、そして平成のアニメ作品の歌が、同じ和楽器によって演奏されることで、日本のさまざまな時代が一つの流れとして感じられる、素晴らしい時間だったと思います。伝統音楽が、現代でもその場の人々をつなげ、楽しい時間を創ることができるものであると実感しました。また踊りと融合することで新しい形でも広まっていくのではないでしょうか。伝統音楽が、世界のさまざまな人々に楽しまれ続ける未来になることを願っています！
