“Mochitsuki” Experience in Matsudo!
On April 12, I participated in the “International Mochitsuki Festival,” hosted by Junior Chamber International Matsudo and held in cooperation with Ryutsu Keizai University at their Shin-Matsudo Campus Building 2!
Mochi, often eaten during the New Year and other special occasions in Japan, is made by steaming glutinous rice (sticky rice) and pounding it with a large mallet called a "kine." When picked up with chopsticks, it stretches with a satisfying pull, and it has a mouthfeel that I can only explain as being smooth, almost like silk. The process of pounding the mochi is called "mochitsuki", which I experienced for the first time at this festival. The repeated motions of raising a kine overhead and striking down with force gave me the sense of connecting with a culinary tradition that dates back many ages ago. There’s a saying in Japan: “Each grain of rice is a drop of sweat,” which encourages others to not let food go to waste, but after this experience, I am sure that it takes even more sweat than that to make mochi!
While the festival centered around mochitsuki, as the word “international” in the name of the event suggests, there were also many opportunities to experience other cultures. There were corners for experiencing Chinese tai chi, traditional Vietnamese clothing, and I had the chance to try a game called “thong toss” (flip-flop toss) at the Australian game corner. I thought the idea of playing with footwear and humorously calling it a “sport” is such a perfect expression of Australian wit and lightheartedness.
Thanks to events like the “Matsudo International Cultural Festival” held last October, which I’ve introduced in past columns, opportunities have increased for Matsudo residents to encounter the sentiments of other cultures through the lens of intercultural cohesion. At this event, we at the Internationalization Promotion Division set up a space for drawing postcards to be sent to Matsudo’s sister city, Whitehorse, Australia--offering a chance for us to return those sentiments from Matsudo. Many children were seen creating self-drawn postcards with heartfelt messages in English, along with drawings of cute animals and famous landmarks in Matsudo. The postcards will be on display at “Japan Festival 2025” held in Whitehorse this month, so I hope that participants will be able to feel the charm of Matsudo, and that our sister-city bond continues to deepen!
松戸市内でもちつき体験！
4月12日に、松戸青年会議所主催で流通経済大学の協力の下、同大学の新松戸キャンパス2号館にて開催された「インターナショナルもちつきフェスティバル」に参加してきました！
日本で正月等の時によく食べられるもちは、もち米を蒸して杵でつくことで作られます。お箸で掴むと、もちはビヨーンと伸び、口に運ぶと、その舌ざわりがまるで絹のようにすべすべしていて、それ以外の表現が思いつきません。今回のフェスティバルでは、私は初めて餅つきを体験しました！杵を振り上げ、力強く振り下ろす動作を繰り返すことで、もち作りした体験は、大昔からの食文化に触れたような気分になりました。「米の一粒は汗の一滴」という食べ物を大切にする日本の言葉があるのですが、もちであれば、汗の重みが随分増していますね！
もちつきを中心としたフェスティバルでしたが、イベントの名前のとおり、他国の文化に触れる機会が多くありました。中国の太極拳やベトナムの民族衣装の体験があり、私はオーストラリアのコーナーで設けられていた「スリッパ投げ」というゲームを体験しました。履き物で遊び、冗談をめかしてそれを「スポーツ」だと呼ぶ姿勢は、オーストラリア人ならでのユーモア精神があふれていました。
昨年10月に行われた「松戸市国際文化祭」など、これまでのコラムで紹介させていただいたイベントのおかげで、世界の文化を通して、松戸市民が多文化共生の観点で温かい思いに触れる機会がより多くなりました。今回のイベントでは、国際推進課で、松戸市の姉妹都市であるオーストラリア・ホワイトホース市へ送る絵手紙を描く場所を設置させていただき、松戸市からの思いを返す機会になりました。絵手紙を描いている子どもたちの姿が多く見られ、手紙には英語で温かい思いを込めたメッセージと共に、松戸の名所や可愛い動物の絵が描かれていました。今月に、ホワイトホース市で行われる「ジャパン・フェスティバル2025」で展示されますので、参加する方々が松戸市の魅力を感じ、姉妹都市としてますます交流が深まるといいですね！
