Participating in the Citizen Science Project “The Garden Experiment”!
In a previous column, I shared how my experience growing vegetables in Matsudo has shown me how much having a garden plot with others can bring people closer together. We all share the same goal of raising vegetables together, helping one another, nurturing our crops, and coming together to celebrate the harvesting of the crops, and it is through these moments that I have come to feel that my time spent gardening has become truly irreplaceable.
From October 24 to 26, 2025, Matsudo hosted the 2025 Matsudo International Science Art Festival. Among its programs was a citizen science project called "The Garden Experiment," jointly organized by the Science and Technology Office of the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan and the festival’s laboratory team. I also took part in this project while making use of my garden. The experiment was very simple: participants mixed compost provided by the lab team into the soil of their home gardens, farming fields, or community plots. Since there were two types of compost, each participant chose two places in their garden to mix them into the soil. In my own plot, I set up the experimental areas right next to the broccoli and Chinese cabbage beds that I grow with local friends. About 100 participants are taking part in the experiment from Japan and about 200 from Switzerland, who are carrying out the same experiment in Switzerland. A year and a half ago, I rented a small garden plot because I wanted to connect with the local community. At the time, I never imagined that this little plot in Matsudo, which began as a small part of the local community, would become the starting point for having a connection with so many people around the world.

After six weeks have passed, participants from both countries will submit soil samples to the Japanese research partner, the Biomanufacturing Process Research Center of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. Researchers will then study how the microorganisms in the compost interact with the microorganisms originally in the soil, and if the experiment succeeds, it may help restore nutrients to soil that has become depleted. Through the results from everyone involved, scientists may find new clues for growing healthier plants in the future.
Now after going to my community garden and seeing the experimental plots next to my sprouting vegetables, it occurred to me that this small garden has become more than a place where neighbors help each other. It has become a symbol of people around the world working together to improve the environment, bringing even more meaning to a place that was already special to me.
In October 2026, the results from all participants will be displayed at the next Matsudo International Science Art Festival at Tojo-tei Residence. Alongside artworks that combine science and creativity, visitors will see the small worlds and personal stories of local farmers and people caring for their home gardens in Matsudo and Switzerland. Knowing that this international connection was made through something as tiny as microorganisms I think will make the event resonate even more strongly. 以前のコラムでは私が松戸で農業をしている経験を通して、「畑」という場所がどれほど人と人との距離を近づけてくれるのか、実感したことを伝えてきました。「野菜を一緒に育てあげる」という同じ目標を共有し、互いに助け合い、仲間と野菜を育て、収穫を共に喜ぶ日々の中で、畑での時間が自分にとってかけがえのないものになっていくのを感じています。

2025年10月24日から6日にかけて、松戸市の「科学と芸術の丘2025」が開催されました。その中で、在日スイス大使館・科学技術部と科学と芸術の丘のラボチームの共催で実施した市民科学プロジェクト「The Garden Experiment」があり、私も参加しました。参加者の庭や畑の土に、ラボチームから提供された堆肥を混ぜるだけという、とてもシンプルな実験です。堆肥は2種類あるため、庭や畑内で混ぜる場所を2カ所決めます。私の畑では、仲間と育てているブロッコリーや白菜の区画のすぐ隣に、実験区画を作りました。このプロジェクトでは、日本から約100人、スイスから約200人が参加しましたが、スイスの参加者はスイスで同じ実験を行います。私は一年半前に地域のコミュニティと交流したいと思い、畑を借りて農業を始めましたが、その畑が松戸にある小さなコミュニティを超えて、これだけ多くの世界の人々とつながるきっかけになるとは全く想像していませんでした。6週間後、両国の参加者たちが、土のサンプルを日本側の研究パートナーである「産業技術総合研究所バイオものづくり研究センター」へ提出することで、堆肥の微生物と元々土の中に存在する微生物がどのような変化を起こしたのかを学びます。この実験がうまくいけば、既に痩せてしまった土が再び元気を取り戻すことが期待されます。この先、皆さんの実験で、より健康な植物を育てるためのヒントを科学者たちが見つけられるようになるかもしれません。
育てている野菜と実験区画が並んでいると、気づけばこの畑は、隣人との協力だけでなく、世界の人々とともに環境をより良くしていこうとする取り組みの象徴のような、私にとってとても大切な場所になっています。
2026年10月に戸定邸で開催される芸術祭「科学と芸術の丘」では、「The Garden Experiment」に参加した皆さんの結果が展示されます。科学と芸術が融合した印象的な作品が並ぶ中、松戸市やスイスの地元農家、そして家庭菜園に励む人々の小さな世界や物語が来場者の目に触れることはとても魅力的で、そのつながりが、小さな微生物の世界にあるのだと思うと、このイベントがいっそう意義深いものに感じられます。皆さんもぜひ来年の10月に、実験結果を見に行ってみてください！
