Adults Love Picture Books, Too

On September 17, I had the opportunity to serve as a guest lecturer for the seminar titled "International Exchange Through Picture Books and Libraries in the United States," hosted by the Matsudo City Library at the Children's Reading Promotion Center. The workshop was held for the Matsudo City Library read-aloud volunteers, with roughly 80 people taking part!
When people hear "picture book storytelling," they often picture an activity meant strictly for young children. However, as a Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) dedicated to sharing multicultural perspectives, picture books that feature different cultures are an invaluable tool for me. In just a few pages, a story lets readers naturally connect with a country's history, culture, and everyday life. In fact, Matsudo City even launched a new exchange program this year involving the exchanging of picture books with our sister city of Whitehorse, Australia in celebration of our 55th anniversary.
The central theme of my lecture was the magic of introducing other cultures through picture books. In the United States, where a wide variety of literature is published, picture books explore a vast array of topics. As an example during the talk, I introduced “Game Maker,” a picture book that illustrates the history behind the invention of basketball, and read an excerpt to the audience.
Picture books make learning about culture and history far more engaging. The attendees strongly resonated with the idea that grown-ups can be drawn into the world of picture books just as easily as children. Many of the participants showed keen interest in the origin story of basketball shared in Game Maker. Even without a strong interest in basketball itself, compelling narrative arcs, such as watching a protagonist grow and overcome hurdles to reach a goal, naturally pull any reader in.
In the second half of the seminar, I touched on how libraries operate in the United States. Drawing from the firsthand experiences of an American friend who has worked at libraries in states such as Delaware, I highlighted several differences compared to libraries in Japan. The participants listened with great curiosity, especially when hearing about my friend driving around a "Mobile Library" to bring books directly to local neighborhoods.
To conclude the session, we held a live reading together. As I read an English picture book built around repetitive phrases, the participants eagerly chimed in, recalling words from previous pages and filling the room with smiles and laughter. Seeing this definitely helped reaffirm for me one of the points that I was trying to make: that adults can also enjoy the storytelling of picture books.
Building on the insights gained from this seminar, I look forward to continuing my work as a CIR and meeting many more of you through upcoming events and international exchange programs!
