「レッツゴー キャム！」Cam, Ikuzo! Come follow Camden’s journey! August 2026

On July 2nd, I held a Partner Lecture titled "Current Hot Topics in America" for members of the "Wakaba Salon" group in Shin-Matsudo. I introduced current topics and trends popular in the United States, such as the 2026 World Cup, American attitudes toward AI, and top travel destinations. However, what I was most focused on as the speaker was not simply teaching about the current state of America, but creating a space for participants to share their opinions and discuss their respective values and perspectives.

First, I gave an introduction to general American identity. While America is already well known as a "country of freedom," engaging in dialogue with participants regarding topics such as American workplace preferences provided an opportunity to deepen their understanding of why Americans truly value "individualism."

Next, we set aside time for everyone to discuss each of the five topics introduced above. Participants asked candid questions, such as "Why is that trending in America right now?" and freely shared their opinions while comparing the situation to Japan. As we explored each topic, frequently participants shared their realizations through comments such as, "What is 'common sense' to us isn't necessarily common sense to foreigners with different backgrounds."

Through this lecture, discussing the same topics together served as a reminder that every participant brings their own unique mindset, values, and background. I felt that building on these kinds of dialogues can be a meaningful way to foster mutual understanding. For example, when foreigners live in Japan, they often encounter unfamiliar customs, such as trash disposal rules. When communicating these rules, it’s important to explain the reasons behind them and also to maintain everyday interactions so that the understanding between foreigners and their Japanese neighbors can deepen.

To promote intercultural understanding, the Matsudo International Exchange Association (MIEA) dispatches 31 "Matsudo International Cultural Ambassadors" from 14 countries to take part in local workshops and events. Separate from MIEA’s activities, I also accept requests for community lectures through Matsudo City's "Partner Kouza" (lecture) system. 7月2日、新松戸で活動をしている「わかばサロン」の皆さんを対象に、パートナー講座「今、アメリカで話題沸騰」を開催しました。2026年ワールドカップや、AIに対するアメリカ人の意識、人気の旅行先など、現在米国で人気な話題やトレンドをテーマに紹介しました。しかし、今回講師として私が一番大切にしたのは、単にアメリカの現状を教えることではなく、参加者が意見を出し合い、それぞれの価値観や考え方を話し合う時間です。

まず、一般的なアメリカのアイデンティティーについて紹介しました。アメリカは「自由な国」としてすでによく知られていると思いますが、例えば職場の環境に対するアメリカ人の好みなどについて参加者と対話をすることで、実際にどうしてアメリカ人は国の「個人主義」を大切にしているか、理解を深めてもらう機会になりました。

次に、上記で紹介した5つのトピックそれぞれについて全員でディスカッションする時間を設けました。参加者の皆さんには「なぜ今アメリカでそれがトレンドになっているのか？」といった率直な疑問を投げかけて日本の状況と比較しながら各自の意見を自由に共有していただきました。1つの話題に対して多角的に話し合う中で、皆さんから自然と「自分たちにとっての『当たり前』は、異なる背景を持つ外国人には必ずしも当たり前ではないんだね」という気づきの声が上がりました。

今回の講座では、同じ話題について話し合うことで、参加者それぞれに考えかたや価値観、背景があることに改めて気づくことができました。このような対話を積み重ねることは、お互いを理解するきっかけの1つになるのではないかと感じています。例えば、外国人が日本で生活する際、ゴミ出しのルールなど慣れない習慣に直面することがよくあります。外国人に対しルールを伝える時に、その理由を伝えたり、日頃から交流を重ねたりすることで、お互いの理解が深まることもあるのではないかと思いました。
