「レッツゴー キャム！」Cam, Ikuzo! Come follow Camden’s journey! April 2026

On March 8, the “MIEA World Tour: Naginata (Japanese Curved Spear) Hands on Experience for Foreign Residents” was held, organized by the Matsudo City International Exchange Association (MIEA). With the cooperation of instructors and members of the Matsudo Naginata Federation, the event took place at the “Budokan” inside the Kendo Hall in Matsudo Sports Park. A naginata is a weapon about 210-225 cm long, consisting of a curved blade mounted on the end of a long wooden shaft, and it is now practiced as a martial art. For this event, the participants were foreign residents living in Japan, and everyone spent a very meaningful time experiencing Japanese martial arts.

I also took part while serving as an English interpreter, and it was my first time experiencing a Japanese martial art. I got to try techniques unique to naginata, such as striking the shin. I was taught how to raise the naginata above my head and then strike the instructor’s protective armor, which produced a crisp, satisfying sound, and I was impressed by how the naginata can reach even an opponent who was quite far away from me.

However, I learned that naginata is not only about “striking an opponent” and “preventing being struck.” It also places a strong emphasis on etiquette. During the experience, myself and the other participants learned in detail about bowing when entering the dojo, how to hold the naginata when lifting it from the floor, and bowing to our partner before the start of the match. By learning each of these movements, we were able to experience the true spirit of naginata as a martial art.

Putting an emphasis on etiquette might seem as though it would make the event less accessible for participants who simply want to try naginata in a casual way. For that reason, when organizing a cultural experience for foreign participants, an important question is how authentic the experience should be. However, what I realized through this event was that careful instruction, even in the smallest details, is something foreign participants genuinely appreciate. Of course, there is plenty of enjoyment to be found in simply taking part in a sport unfamiliar in one’s home country, using equipment one does not normally handle, and learning just a few basics of the activity. However, I feel that the true value of cultural exchange lies in understanding the purpose and way of thinking behind the etiquette and the movements used in an actual match. The emphasis on etiquette within martial arts helps cultivate humility, consideration for others, and a sense of gratitude. When I received careful instruction, like on very small details such as the angle at which to hold the naginata, I found myself thinking, “So this must be how people raised in Japan are taught martial arts,” and I felt that the experience gave me a broader perspective.

3月8日に、松戸市国際交流協会（MIEA）主催の「MIEA世界めぐり　外国人を対象としたなぎなた体験」が行われました。松戸市なぎなた連盟の講師やメンバーの皆さんにご協力いただき、松戸運動公園の武道館・剣道場で開催されました。なぎなたは長い柄の先に反りのある刃を装着した約210~225cmの武器であり、現在は武道として親しまれています。今回のイベントでは、日本在住の外国人の参加者が日本の武道を通してとても有意義な時間を過ごしました。
　
英語通訳をさせていただきながら、私も参加し、初めて日本の武道に触れました。なぎなたならではの「脛打ち」などを体験し、なぎなたを振り上げて先生が着けている防具を打つと小気味よい音が響き、距離がある相手になぎなたが届く点にも魅力を感じました。
　
さらに、なぎなたの「相手を打つこと」と「相手に打たれるのを防ぐこと」だけではなく、武道特有のポイントも学びました。それは、「礼儀作法」です。今回私たち参加者は、道場に入る時のお辞儀、なぎなたを床から持ち上げる時の持ち方、相手へのお辞儀など、礼儀についての細かい動作を一つ一つ学ぶことができ、競技としてなぎなたの武道の精神性を味わうことができました。

「礼儀」まで学ぶことは、「一度だけなぎなたに触れてみたい」と思う外国人の参加者にとって、気軽に楽しめないのではないかと思われるかもしれません。そのため、外国人向けの日本文化体験のイベントを開催するにあたっては、「どこまで本番らしい体験を提供するか」という点が検討されると思います。しかし、今回の体験を通して気づいたのは、細かい所作までこだわる指導は、外国人の参加者に喜ばれるということでした。もちろん、母国にはなかったスポーツを通して体を動かしたり、普段使わない道具を使ったり等、一部を学んだりするだけでも面白いものです。しかし、「どんな目的や考え方がその動作の裏にあるのか」を理解することにこそ、文化交流の醍醐味があると感じます。武道を支えている礼儀作法を重んじる考え方は、思いやりや感謝の気持ちを持つ謙虚な心構えを育みます。私もなぎなた体験に参加し、なぎなたを持つ際の角度など細かな点まで指導されたことで、「あ、日本で生まれ育った人はこのように教えられてきたのだな」と感じ、より広く知見を得ることができたと実感しました。
