Akitake Tokugawa picture book on display in Whitehorse

On Friday, May 22nd, we held the “Picture Book Read-aloud in English!" at the Higashi-Matsudo Regional Library. For this event, I started by reading aloud a picture book sent to us from our sister city of Whitehorse, Australia.

Matsudo and Whitehorse recently celebrated the 55th anniversary of our sister city partnership. As part of our ongoing cultural exchange, both cities are now connecting through the wonderful medium of picture books. In Whitehorse, there is the "Whitehorse Matsudo Toshokan" (Whitehorse Matsudo Library), which was established to commemorate the 50th anniversary of our partnership. This facility allows residents of Whitehorse to experience Japanese culture firsthand through various Japanese books and events. This year, Matsudo donated a picture book to the library, “Akitake Tokugawa: The Lord Who Lived in Matsudo” (created by the Matsudo Song Research Group of Seitoku University Junior College’s childcare department, with supervision and cooperation from the Matsudo City Tojo Historical Museum), along with a laminated English translation. Visitors to the Whitehorse Matsudo Toshokan can now discover Matsudo's history and culture through the picture book!

Matsudo has also received picture books from Whitehorse, and the one I read at this event was called “Possum Magic” (written by Mem Fox and illustrated by Julie Vivas). This book features animals that are unfamiliar to most people in Japan, like possums, as well as unique Australian foods such as Vegemite and Lamingtons. As I was doing the read-aloud, I came to find out why picture books are such a great tool for sparking children's interest in different cultures. Instead of straightforwardly trying to explain what other countries are like, just having aspects of a country’s culture naturally appear within the flow of a story leaves a much deeper impression on young minds. During my read-aloud, the way the children naturally started pointing at the illustrations and calling out words together as they listened was a real testament to that special power that picture books have.

ホワイトホース市で展示された徳川昭武の絵本

5月22日（金）、東松戸地域館にて「英語で楽しむ！読み聞かせ会」を開催しました。当日は、姉妹都市であるオーストラリア・ホワイトホース市から届いた絵本を中心に読み聞かせを行いました。

松戸市とホワイトホース市は、姉妹都市提携55周年を迎えました。その交流の一環として、現在、両市の間で絵本を通じた文化交流が進められています。ホワイトホース市には「Whitehorse Matsudo Toshokan（ホワイトホース松戸図書館）」があり、姉妹都市提携50周年を記念して設立されたこの施設では、日本の書籍やイベントを通じてホワイトホース市民の方々が日本文化に触れられるようになっています。今年は松戸市からこの図書館に絵本『とくがわ あきたけ まつどにくらしたおとのさま』（聖徳大学短期大学部保育課まつどソング研究グループ作成、松戸市戸定歴史館監修・協力）を寄贈し、英訳ラミネート版とともに備えられました。現地の方々に松戸の歴史や文化に触れていただける、嬉しい機会となっています。

松戸市もホワイトホース市から絵本をいただいており、今回の読み聞かせ会で紹介した『ポスおばあちゃんのまほう』（メム・フォックス文、ジュリー・ヴィヴァス絵／原題：”Possum Magic”）もその一つです。この絵本にはポッサムのような日本では馴染みのない動物たちや、ベジマイト、ラミントンといったオーストラリアならではの食べ物が登場します。こうした異文化に子どもたちが関心を持つきっかけとして、絵本はこれ以上ないほど親しみやすいツールだと感じています。説明文で「こういう文化があります」と伝えるよりも、物語の流れの中で自然に出てくる方がより伝わりやすいため、当日聞いていた子どもの心にずっと深く残ると思います。読み聞かせを聞きながら一緒に絵を指さしたり声に出したりする子どもたちと自然と双方向のやり取りが生まれたのは、絵本の貴重な力の証でした。
