Here comes Javi! October 2020 Issue

It was 4 o’clock. I was the only person in the world. The parks were empty, so I sat on the swings enveloped in solemn silence, and looked at the sky. It was 4 o’clock in the morning.

Matsudo is a huge city with lots to appreciate, and even familiar haunts can show new colors when shone with moonlight instead of sunlight. In fact, the moon itself was also a treat to behold! I have come to appreciate Japan’s culture of Tsukimi for how it invites us to admire the full moon and be grateful for it and all the other small joys in our lives.

In America we have a similar tradition to celebrate the autumn harvest called Thanksgiving, but Tsukimi is not celebrated, or even well-known, at all, so in that way we are different from Japan. But look up at the night sky. Everyone around the world gazes upon the same moon. When I look at the moon, I feel like I’m alongside everyone in the world. I am grateful that I can appreciate this beautiful autumn moon in good health, and I hope you too can enjoy a moonlit walk to appreciate it as well.

4時でした。世界に私ひとりでした。公園は誰もいませんでしたので、厳かな静寂に包まれてブランコで座って、空を見ながらぼんやりしました。朝の4時でした。

松戸市はたくさん鑑賞できるところがある大きい都市で、自分に身近な場所でも月光に照らされると新しく見えることがあります。また、秋の月も美しかったです！日本の「月見」文化は満月の鑑賞をしながら日々の小さい喜びに感謝するものであり、有意義だと思います。

アメリカにも秋の収穫を祝う「感謝祭」という伝統がありますが、月を見て楽しむことはしないので日本の風習とは異なります。でも、夜空を向いて下さい。世界どこにいても皆同じお月様を眺めることができます。月を眺めると、私は世界の皆と一緒だと感じます。秋の美しい月を皆と一緒に鑑賞できること、そして健康に感謝をしています。キミも月光の中を散歩して、月を鑑賞してはいかがですか？
