2026 - 55th Sister City Anniversary 姉妹都市55周年

　　On May 12, 1971, Matsudo City in Japan and Whitehorse City in Australia officially established a sister city partnership. Over the following 55 years (over half a century!) our two cities and their residents have continued to deepen their friendship together. In order to carry this friendship into the future, we will continue promoting exchanges that further strengthen the bonds between our two cities.
　オーストラリアのホワイトホース市と松戸市は、1971年（昭和46年）5月12日に姉妹都市提携を行いました。それから55年、半世紀以上にわたって市民の皆さんと一緒に、友好を深めてきました。この友好を未来へとつなげるため、両市の絆をさらに深めていけるような交流を続けてまいります。

　Whitehorse City Girl Guides sends their congratulations to Matsudo City and Matsudo Guide Scouts on the 55th anniversary of the very important Matsudo City’s Sister City Promotion Program. This deep bond and friendship this program have created over the past 55 years is sincerely valued by all that has been involved. Sharing our Cities with the other City’s visiting group deepens our understanding and appreciate the similarities and differences of each City. Participants feel like the other’s City is their second home and always have a welcoming home away from home.
　　With a world that seems to be less tolerate of differences, our Matsudo Partnership closes the differences of 2 cultures, creating a single union of sisterhood and experiences. This brings our cultures together, sharing fun times and experiences that all love and enjoy.

　ホワイトホース・ガールガイドは、姉妹都市提携55周年を記念し、松戸市および松戸ガール・スカウトの皆様に心よりお祝いを申し上げます。このプログラムが過去55年間に築き上げてきた深い絆と友情は、関わってきたすべての人々によって心から大切にされています。 互いの都市を訪問することは、それぞれの都市の共通点や相違点への理解を深め、その価値を認識するきっかけとなります。参加者は、相手方の都市を第二の故郷のように感じ、いつでも温かく迎え入れてくれる「もう一つの居場所」を持つことができます。
　違いに対する寛容さが失われつつあるこの世界において、松戸市との交流は、両市の文化の隔たりを埋め、姉妹都市としての絆と経験を一つに結びつけています。これにより、互いの文化が結びつき、誰もが心から楽しめる豊かな時間と体験を分かち合っています。

　We, the Girl Scouts of Matsudo Liaison Committee, are so happy to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the sister city bond between Matsudo and Whitehorse. This wonderful friendship has grown over many years thanks to the kindness and warm connections shared by so many people. Our own journey of exchange began with the very first program in 1985. Over the past 41 years, we have built a foundation of trust and friendship that is now a treasure shared across generations. We look forward to making our bond even stronger and continuing this beautiful friendship for many more years to come.

　私たち、ガールスカウト松戸市連絡協議会は、松戸市とホワイトホース市が姉妹都市提携55周年を迎えられたことを心よりお祝い申し上げます。長きにわたり育まれてきた両市の友情は、この友好に関わってきたすべての人々の温かな交流に支えられてきました。私たちは1985年の第1回交流事業以来、41年間にわたり交流を続けており、そこで築かれた信頼と友情は、世代を超えて受け継がれる大切な財産となっています。これからも互いを思いやる心を大切にしながら、未来へ続く豊かな友情をさらに深めていきたいと願っています。

　Traditionally, every five years on the anniversary of the sister city partnership, delegations led by the mayors of both cities visit one another to celebrate.

　For the 55th anniversary, the celebrations will be held online in order to ensure stable operation and the continued sustainability of the program. As was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, even though we cannot meet in person, Matsudo and Whitehorse remain closely connected as sister cities despite the distance between us. Through online exchanges and various other activities, we will celebrate 55 years of friendship while continuing to deepen the ties between our two cities and countries.

　両市では、5年ごとの姉妹都市提携記念日に、市長をはじめとする訪問団がお互いの都市を訪問してお祝いしていました。
　55周年は、今後の安定した運営と継続的な開催を実現するためオンラインでの実施を選択しました。2022年のコロナ禍の時などと同様、直接会うことができなくても、遠く離れた大切な姉妹都市として互いに繋がり続けています。オンライン交流をはじめ、さまざまな形で、両国・両都市の絆を深めながら、55年の友好の歩みをお祝いする予定です。

　Since FY2023, Matsudo City and our sister city, Whitehorse (Australia), have been participating in a heart-warming exchange of Etegami (hand-drawn postcards) created by our residents. From Matsudo, we send postcards that capture the unique charm and beauty of our city to share with the people of Whitehorse.

These postcards will be exhibited at "Japan Festival 2026" in Whitehorse on Sunday, May 24, 2026 . Thanks to the wonderful cooperation of our residents, we were able to send 135 Postcard Drawing to the site in 2026. In return, postcards sent from Whitehorse will be displayed at various locations throughout Matsudo City.

　両市では、令和5年度より、市民の皆さんからお寄せいただいた絵手紙を相互に送り合う交流を行っています。松戸市からは、ホワイトホース市の皆さんに知ってもらいたい、松戸の魅力を描いた絵手をお送りしております。
　松戸市から送られた絵手紙は、令和8年5月24日（日曜）オーストラリア・ホワイトホース市で開催される「ジャパン・フェスティバル2026」で展示されます。令和8年は、市民の皆さんにご協力いただき、135枚の絵手紙を現地に送りました。ホワイトホース市から送られた絵手紙は、市内各所で展示します。現在、絵手紙の募集を終了しておりますが、展示の様子など、下記サイトをご覧ください。

　To commemorate the 55th anniversary of the sister city relationship, the two cities will exchange children’s picture books.

　Inspired by more than 50 years of grassroots exchanges between the two cities, Whitehorse established the Whitehorse Matsudo Toshokan inside the Box Hill Community Arts Centre with the support of the Whitehorse City Council. In FY2024, the library was officially recognized by Whitehorse City as a volunteer organization.

　Through exchanges such as this year’s picture book sharing, we are planning various projects involving the exchange of picture books between one another with the Whitehorse Matsudo Toshokan, so that the bond between our two cities may deepen further and be carried on to many citizens in the next generation.

　姉妹都市提携55周年を記念し、両市で絵本を送り合う交流を実施します。ホワイトホース市では、両市の50年にわたる草の根交流に感銘を受け、市議会の支援を得てボックスヒル・コミュニティー・アーツ・センター内に「ホワイトホース松戸図書館」を設立し、令和6年度にはホワイトホース市から公式ボランティア認証されました。
　絵本交流などを通じて、両市の絆がさらに深まり、広く次世代へとつながるよう、ホワイトホース松戸図書館との間で絵本を送り合う事業を予定しています。

　The flower beds in front of the main entrance of Matsudo City Hall will be decorated with flower arrangements celebrating the 55th anniversary. The display will feature flowers arranged in the shape of the number “55” along with the shape of a koala, symbolizing the sister city relationship with Australia.

• Display Period: June 6 or June 13, 2026 (The end date may vary depending on weather and flower conditions.)

　松戸市役所の正面玄関前の花壇を、55周年を記念した花文字で彩ります。「55」の文字、また「コアラ」の形が描かれています。

　Ms. Tsukasa Takeda, a lacquer artist living in Matsudo, has generously donated a work of art to be presented to Whitehorse City in celebration of the 55th anniversary of the sister city relationship. Even though the people of our two cities admire the cherry blossoms in different corners of the world, we look up to the same moon in the sky. And from the moon’s light reflects a sentiment that does not fade with the passing of time.

　Ms. Takeda’s works are based on traditional lacquer techniques while depicting familiar motifs such as people and nature from a contemporary perspective that blends realism and abstraction.

　市内在住でもある武田様より、姉妹都市提携55周年を記念し、ホワイトホース市贈呈用の作品のご寄贈をいただきました。両市、別々の場所で桜を愛でていても、仰ぐ空に浮かぶ月はただ一つ。時を重ねても色褪せない思いを、月の光に重ねています。
　武田さんの作品は伝統的な漆芸技術をベースにしつつ、人や自然といった身近なモチーフを、リアリティと抽象性が融合した現代的な視点で描く点が特徴です。

　I thought it was fascinating that there were so many varieties, that they grew quickly, and that the shapes of the leaves were very beautiful. Some leaves are heart-shaped while others are long and slender, so I found the variety of shapes very charming. Also, the way it gave off a fragrance left an impression on me as well.

　After I learned that eucalyptus was a plant from Australia, I wrote the letter with a very strong interest in trying to grow one myself and thought it would be nice if they existed in Japan too.

　Writing a letter in English was still difficult for me at the time, so I recall writing it in Japanese and asking my English teacher to translate it.

　My teachers were very supportive. Eucalyptus trees were planted at the school and later along city streets. I also remember that a koala plush toy was sent from Australia and displayed at the school.
Another memorable moment was when we sent ginkgo seeds to Australia to say thank you for their eucalyptus seeds. The people of Whitehorse were enchanted by the ginkgo leaves, beautifully remarking that they looked like 'a maiden's flowing hair.

　種類がたくさんあり、成長も早く、葉っぱの形がとてもきれいだと思いました。ハート形や細く長い葉など、形がいろいろあってかわいいなと感じました。香りがするところも印象に残っています。

　ユーカリがオーストラリアの植物と知り、実際に育ててみたい、日本にもあったらいいなという強い興味で手紙を出しました。

　英語で手紙を書くというのはまだ難しく、日本語で書いたものを、英語の先生に訳してもらったことを覚えています。

　先生方がとても協力してくださいました。学校ではユーカリが植樹され、街路樹としても植えられました。また、オーストラリアからコアラのぬいぐるみが送られてきて、学校に飾られていたのを覚えています。
　また、「ユーカリの種のお礼」としてオーストラリアに銀杏を送ったところ、 イチョウの葉が「乙女の髪のようだ」と喜ばれたことも印象に残っています。

　At that time, it was very rare to see foreigners, so it felt like a very special occasion. I do not remember whether he spoke Japanese, but I remember thinking that he was very tall and had a presence to him that was different than that of a Japanese person.

　当時、外国の方を見かけること自体がほとんどなかったので、特別な出来事に感じました。日本語を話されていたかは覚えていないのですが、背が高く、日本人の雰囲気とは少し違うなと思ったことを覚えています。

　I was amazed that something I had simply thought, “I’d like to try that,” ended up leading to such a meaningful result. I strongly feel that it was only possible thanks to the support of many people, including the principal and my teachers, who respected the ideas of students like myself. I am also very grateful that the ambassador kindly sent the eucalyptus seeds. It is something that still remains in my heart.

　I am truly grateful that a small action of mine became the starting point for an exchange that has continued thanks to the efforts of so many people, and I sincerely hope that this connection will continue to be cherished in the future.

　自分が「やってみたい」と思ったことが、このような結果に結びついたことに、信じられない気持ちでした。校長先生や担任の先生をはじめとした多くの方の助けと、生徒の思いを尊重してくださる姿勢があったからこそだと、深く感じています。また、大使が快くユーカリの種を送ってくださったことも大変ありがたく、今でも心に残っています。

　自分の小さな行動がきっかけとなり、多くの方の力で交流が続いてきたことは、本当にありがたいことです。これからも、このつながりが大切に続いていくことを願っています。

　Since 1971, Matsudo City has sent junior high and high school students to Whitehorse City with the primary aim of fostering international understanding and independence among the next generation. Participants stay with host families, experience Australian lifestyles firsthand, and attend local schools to gain insight into school life. 　 With the pursuit of contributing to international peace, the Matsudo International Exchange Association (MIEA) carries out international exchange activities that leverage the history, culture, and unique characteristics of Matsudo City to promote mutual understanding and camaraderie between Matsudo residents, regardless of nationality. MIEA has also been helping the city with events and projects for the 55th sister city relationship anniversary.

　松戸市国際交流協会（MIEA）では、松戸市の歴史や文化、特性をいかして、市民レベルでの相互理解や友好親善を深め、国際平和に寄与することを目的に国際交流活動を行っています。姉妹都市55周年記念事業も、市と連携協力しながら進めています。

　The new civic theatre “The Round” is a state-of-the-art performing arts and events facility. It features a theatre with over 600 seats, multipurpose studios, and the outdoor “soundshell,” providing a wide range of rental spaces. 　Whitehorse City Council promotes an age-friendly environment by supporting a community that strengthens the physical, social, and mental well-being of older residents.
　To commemorate International Women’s Day 2025, a special video clip has been released highlighting the “The Biscuit Tin” project. The project celebrates the stories, accumulated wisdom, and resilience of older women in the local community. A website featuring the biscuit recipes shown in the video is also posted below, so be sure to check it out!
