コロンブスは、マルコ・ポーロの「東方見聞録」に記された黄金の国ジパングを目指して航海を続けており、金が多く産出されるドミニカ共和国をジパングだと信じていたと言われています。地球の反対側に位置する日本とドミニカ共和国は、500年以上も前から縁があったのですね。ドミニカ共和国は、スペイン、フランス、ハイチ領を経て、1844年2月27日に独立します。
ドミニカ共和国の首都サントドミンゴには、コロンブス広場があり、サンタ・マリア・らメール大聖堂前には、新大陸を指して立つコロンブス像があります。

In the year 1492, Columbus arrived at what is now the Northern part of the Dominican Republic, which he named Espanola Island.
Columbus continued his voyage to Zipangu, the land of gold described in Marco Polo’s book “Discoveries of the East,” and it is said that he believed that the Dominican Republic, which produced a lot of gold, was Zipangu (Japan). So the Dominican Republic and Japan had a historical connection over 500 years ago from opposite sides of the planet. The Dominican Republic gained independence on February 27th, 1844 after having been part of Spain, French and Haitian territory.
The Dominican Republic’s capital, Santo Domingo, is home to Columbus Plaza, and in front of the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor there is a statue of Columbus pointing towards the “new world.”
