4. Three Lions Dance 三匹獅子舞

Japan has a long tradition of the lion dance, known as shishi-mai (獅子舞) in Japanese. The first lion dance recorded in Japan was at the inauguration ceremonies of Todai-ji in Nara in 752. The dance is commonly performed during the New Year to bring good luck and drive away evil spirits, and the lion dancers may be accompanied by flute and drum musicians. It is also performed at other festivals and celebrations. In some of these performances, the lions may bite people on the head to bring good luck.

The origins of the Three Lions Dance tradition in Matsudo are unknown, however it is still performed in three different districts each year. Each event takes place at a different time. In September the dance will be performed as follows -

  • Venue: Wanagaya Hie Shrine (From Matsudo Station, 5min walk after taking the Shin-Keisei bus to the Wanagaya Nakadai Stop)
  • Dates: September 20 (Thursday), 21 (Friday), and 22 (Saturday), 2018
  • Time: Starts at 19:00
