Manman-ji Temple was built in 1256. The two statues of Guardian Nio that stand at the temple’s entrance have been designated Important Cultural Property of Japan. It is said that in the olden days people used to pray to the Guardian for vitality and then pass through the statue’s legs as a form of ritual. Nowadays, special access is given to the public only three times a year, enabling them to continue this leg-passing ritual in the pursuit of good health.
