Festival Events 祭り
1. Yagiri Beer Festival 矢切ビールまつり
This annual celebration is a great way to unwind with friends and family after a hard day at work. The plaza around Yagiri Station will be filled with food stalls selling all the festival favourites (be sure to try the grilled skewers!). And as the name suggests, there will also be beer available on tap, and plenty of non-alcoholic options too.
In regards to entertainment, stage performances are scheduled on both evenings to entertain the crowds. And to top it off, there will also be a beauty pageant of sorts for local girls. The winner will be crowned 'Yakiri Tourism Ambassador' for the proceeding year. Exciting!
Date: Wednesday 2nd & Thursday 3rd of August, 2017

Access: Via train, or local bus (incl. Keisei Bus 11 from Matsudo Station west exit)
※Will proceed in the case of rain, but will be cancelled in the case of stormy weather.
2. Dream fireworks 2017, brought to you by the Matsudo City community ～みんなであげる夢花火 松戸花火大会イン2017
Fireworks will blaze through the night sky in an impressive simultaneous display of light, colour and sound. This is a highlight on the annual calendar and is not to be missed!
Date: Saturday 5th of August, 2017*
*In the case of a storm or strong winds, the fireworks will be postponed to Sunday 6th August
Location: Edogawa River bank (best accessed via the road that passes the Municipal Library)
Useful information -
- Extreme crowds are expected during the afternoon and evening, so please utilise public transportation to/from the venue
- Please take care to avoid accident, injury, and lost children etc.
- Please seperate and dispose of your rubbish at the designated collection spots
- Drones and other remote controlled aerial devices are not to be used during the festival
3. 12th Annual Sakagawa River Lantern Festival 第12回の献灯まつり
Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of Matsudo's iconic Sakagawa Lantern Festival! Over 1300 paper lanterns (handmade by local children) will be floated down the river as musicians entertain from the stage and delicious festival food is sold along the river bank. Be sure to try the 'Toumorokoshi' - rich local corn, char-grilled and devoured straight from the cob!

4. Last Summer Festival and Bon Dance ラストサマーフェス&盆おどり
This annual event is a celebration of both traditional culture and modern pastimes. Head to Matsudo Central Park ('Chuo Koen') to enjoy free entertainment, live music, festival stalls, and Japanese bon dancing. Also keep an eye out for the many cosplayers who come every year to make the most of the festive atmosphere. What a perfect way to end the summer holiday season in Matsudo!

5. Kogane Town Festival 小金宿まつり
The Kogane Town Festival is back this year! Great music, food stalls, dancing, more dancing. ...Did I mention the dancing? Definitely not one to be missed!

1. PROJECT 1867: Celebrating 150 years of the Paris Expo PART 2: 'Photography and the Expo' 1867年パリ万博150周年記念展－第2期 写真と万博
The House of Tokugawa ruled Japan over a period of 264 years until 1867 (the Edo Period). The “shogun” was at the top of this ruling structure. The younger brother of the last shogun was Akitake Tokugawa. He was expected to be the successor to his older brother, and was sent to the 1867 Paris Exposition as a representative of the shogun where he carried out court diplomacy with the kings and emperors of other countries. However, a change in government occurred while he was in Paris, and by the time he returned to Japan, the era of the House of Tokugawa was already over.
In celebration of 150 years since Prince Tokugawa's participation in the Paris Exposition, Tojo Museum has organised a 3-part exhibition. The second part will be on display from July through September, and presents a photographic record of the Paris Expo.

2. Planetarium screenings @ Naoko Space Planetarium プラネタリウム室のスケジュール
The Matsudo Shimin Kaikan (Citizens' Centre) is home to the 'Naoko Space Planetarium', aptly named after former astronaut and Matsudo local Naoko Yamazaki. The planetarium runs seasonal screenings. The summer schedule is as follows -

Entry fee: 50yen for adults, free for children (junior school and below) and pensioners (65 years and over). Entry tickets are required and can be picked up/purchased on the 2nd floor up to 30min prior to each screening.

3. 'Excavation! Discovery! Matsudo's Kofun Period', an interactive exhibition at Matsudo Municipal Museum 館蔵資料展「発掘！発見！松戸の古墳時代」（松戸市立博物館）
This program is perfect for the kids during the summer holiday break!

1. Pear picking season has arrived! 梨もぎの季節がやっと来ました！
The wait is over! The pears are here!
There are over 50 pear farms in Matsudo City alone, growing and selling nine different varieties of pears throughout the season. Different pear varieties have different levels of sweetness, acidity and juiciness, and also differ in overall size and firmness (download the pamphlet below for more details).
Admission is free, and you only pay for the fruit you pick.
※Please be aware that some farms only offer direct sale
Season: Mid-August through mid-October
Price: 650 yen/kg, for both picking and direct sale

2. Local outdoor swimming pools now open 暑い夏はプールへ行こう！
Need to escape the summer heat? Why not give one of Matsudo's municipally-operated outdoor pools a try? They're cheap, family friendly and open until the end of August.

PARADISE AIR will hold an opening reception with new resident artists for the LONGSTAY Program 2017. They are going to introduce themselves and their project plans for their residency. There will also be an opening party afterwards, so please feel free to drop by and meet the new artists in Matsudo!

4. MIEA English Speech Contest for high school students （公財）松戸市国際交流協会の英語スピーチコンテスト
The Matsudo International Exchange Association (MIEA) will hold it's annual English Speech Contest for high school students in mid-August. Entrants will speak without prompts for several minutes on a topic of their choosing, and winners will be awarded a fully funded place on the 2017 MIEA Student Delegation trip to Matsudo's Sister City, Whitehorse in Australia. Stakes are high and spectators are encouraged!

5. Gathering of foreign parents and babies @ 'Hot Room Shin Matsudo' (public playspace) 海外から来たママとパパの広場 ＠ ほっとるーむ新松戸
On the 4th Thursday of every month the 'Hot Room Shin Matsudo' playspace holds a casual gathering for foreign parents and their babies. The session is also popular amongst parents with foreign spouses, parents who have lived overseas in the past, and those who have an interest in foreign cultures. It is completely free and open to anyone with a young child (generally up to the age of 3).

6. Tozen-ji Temple Antique & Craft Market 東漸寺の骨董市＆手作りマーケット
Tozen-ji Temple (Kogane district) holds an antique fair and flea market on the 4th Saturday of every month. Each month approximately 50 local vendors gather together to sell their crafts, wares and antique goods in small stalls that line both sides of the shady stone pathway that leads up to the main temple. There are also a small number of food trucks on sight each month, selling a variety of sweets, pastries, cool drinks, and even some foreign foods (indian etc.). The vibe is relaxed and friendly - a perfect addition to a casual weekend stroll around the Kogane district!
