Here comes Javi! August 2019 Issue

Here comes Javi! - "You have questions, we have answers!"

We received this new message about Matsudo!

Q: Hi, my family and I just moved to Matsudo City last week and we’re starting to get used to our new environment. However, before coming here we lived in a small rural town, so we miss the farm life and all the fresh tomatoes we grew. Where can we find fresh vegetables?

- Tom Ato

A: All around you! Many local farmers sell their produce at city events like Matsudo Matsuri in October, and the Agricultural Administration Division (AAD) has published a map where you can find other places in Matsudo where they sell fresh produce. I heard that the “Matsudo Nousanbutsu Chokubaisho Matsubokkuri” market in Mabashi is particularly popular and active.

If you’d like to try growing your own food though, the Koho Matsudo newspaper (this very paper!) often has “farming experience” listings posted by the AAD that anyone can join! For example, my friend Ha (the other CIR of Matsudo City) loves farming. In early July, she invited me to a farming experience she found where we could harvest over 1kg of edamame at a Matsudo plantation. I didn’t have much farming experience, but kneeling in the soft, fragrant soil just carefully plucking edamame pods was a soothing experience that I hope to do again someday.

Best of all, I was able to make delicious edamame milk with my harvest! Enjoying food and drink that you can’t find at any store or restaurant is simply wonderful! I would definitely recommend trying a farming experience while in Matsudo.

Tom, I hope you found this reply helpful. You just moved, but if you have the time please try to experience a lot in Matsudo!

- Javi
