"Sakiori" - Breathing new life into old fabric

When you hear about weaving, you normally think of using yarns or threads to form a fabric or cloth. Have you ever heard of using fabric to form a new fabric? Let me tell you about this.

Since the Edo period, Japanese people have used unneeded fabrics, ripped into long-thin strips that are eventually weaved into a new fabric. The name of this traditional Japanese weaving technique is “sakiori”. The newly woven fabric is strong and warm with a unique pattern which is totally different from the “mother” fabric. The awkward feeling, since it’s my first time working with a weaving machine, was gradually replaced with the fascination when I saw my fabric coming to life. So, the old and unneeded fabric has a new life with a lovely face and, definitely will become more of help.

It’s the Matsudo Museum that brought this exciting experience to me. I guess museums are not only a place for those who love history, but for those who love experiences like me, and can find joy here. Through this column, I hope you can have for yourself an enjoyable place to visit in the near future. Wishing you a great summer!
